Seeking God
What is “Seeking God”? It could almost be an abstract kind of thing with so many religions and concepts of God in this world. Is it a “do it yourself” approach to religion, or is it just a decision to “get religion”, and life answers?
Why “Seek God”? At least it’s part of anyone’s world view to have a concept of God & basic knowledge of a few religions. My personal reason for Seeking God was to find peace, purpose, fulfillment, etc., and I did find those things. But now I know “Seeking God” is the main reason we are on this planet. Acts 17:26 (below) reveals this to those who believe scripture. Also, I now know God is able to BLESS people, & “Seeking God” promotes that blessing.
How can people “Seek God”? Some claim to be doing it on the golf course. Some thru drug induced meditation, or Eastern religions. Some claim to be getting inspiration as they climb mountains. But usually it’s church attendance, religious music, Scripture, reading inspirational books, etc. I believe these NORMAL actions in “Seeking God” don’t go far without decision, commitment, & determination towards Jesus Christ & His value system. With only half-hearted or insincere “Seeking of God”, folks may easily find false religion or demons instead. If we have a sincere desire to find God, the GOSPEL and a legitimate church will somehow come to us.
So, what is the GOSPEL? It’s what the Apostle Peter took to Cornelius by Divine mandate in Acts chapter 10. “He (J.C.) is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sin through his name.” v. 42-43 Churches that promote this doctrine are on the right track. And there is a mysterious chemistry, or spiritual glow that some churches have, but that “magic?” comes & goes with time. Denominational vitality doesn’t appear to be a constant or steady thing. (This is NOT a reference to the group we are currently attending.) We should trust God to give guidance to find the right church, but church cannot be the whole diet in “Seeking God”. And the landscape is littered with discouraged believers who had a bad experience with a dead church & shallow believers - (years ago we had one of the very worst experiences, but we don’t blame God for that.) See “Which Church is Right” and “The Gopher” links 49 & 82.
I believe “Seeking God” is a two-way street where God is also moving toward the individual and stirring up interest. You might not be reading this if God hadn’t given the urge to do so. He can also reveal things personally to you which is the business of revelation He’s been in for thousands of years now. And scripture is PURE revelation:
- "If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you." 2 Chronicles 15:2b
- "Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon Him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:6-7
- “You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart,” Jeremiah 29:13
- "Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his commands; seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the wrath of the Lord." Zephaniah 2:3
- “. . . seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Jesus said that, Luke 11:9b
-- “He made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. . . ,” Acts 17:26-27 (The MAIN PURPOSE of life.)
